TALLINN — The government of Estonia announced Thursday that it would abandon its currency in favor of a system based entirely on vibes, becoming the first country to do so since the invention of accounting.
Under the plan, prices will be removed from most goods and services and replaced with a general sense of whether something feels expensive. Wages will be paid in “good energy,” with additional compensation for “being normal about it.”
“Money was always a story we told each other,” said finance minister Kadri Sepp. “We are simply telling a shorter one.”
Economists have warned that the transition could cause inflation, deflation, or “a third thing,” and the central bank has asked to be kept informed.
