About Us

The Republic Ledger has been explaining the world since 1889.

Independent, reader-supported, and stubborn about the difference between what happened and what people say happened.

The Republic Ledger was founded in 1889 in a two-room office above a printer’s shop, with a mission that has not changed: report the news without fear or favor, and charge enough for it that nobody else gets to decide what we print.

Today the newsroom has 410 journalists in Washington, New York, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco and nine foreign bureaus. We are owned by The Republic Ledger Media Company, a private company with no outside shareholders and no interest in being acquired.

What we do

We cover politics, business, technology, science, health, culture and sport. We publish investigations that take months, criticism that takes a position, and corrections when we get it wrong — which we do, and which we say so.

How we are funded

Subscriptions account for 78 percent of our revenue. Advertising accounts for the rest. Advertisers have no role in what we cover, and the only thing they can buy is space.

Independence

The editorial page is separate from the newsroom. The publisher does not read stories before publication. The owner has never asked us to spike a story, and the day he does, this paragraph will be the first thing to change.

A note on this website

The Republic Ledger is a satirical publication. Its stories, quotations, institutions and people are invented, and any resemblance to real events is the point. If you have read this far, you are our kind of reader.
