Editorial Standards
How we work
The rules we hold ourselves to, published so you can hold us to them.
Accuracy
We verify before we publish. Every story is read by at least one editor who did not report it. When we get something wrong, we correct it promptly and say what was wrong, not merely that an error occurred.
Corrections
Corrections appear at the bottom of the story and in our corrections log. We do not quietly edit the record. Significant changes are noted with a timestamp.
Sources
We grant anonymity only when a source cannot speak on the record without risking harm, and only with an editor’s approval. We tell readers why a source is anonymous.
Independence
Editorial staff may not accept gifts, travel or speaking fees from anyone we cover. Political donations are prohibited. Freelance work requires approval.
Opinion
Opinion is separate from news. Columns are the views of their authors. The editorial board speaks for the paper, and only the editorial board does.
Satire
The Republic Ledger is a work of satire. Our reporting is invented. We do not intend for it to be mistaken for fact, and we label it here, on our About page and in our footer.
