A widely used AI assistant apologized on Monday for a series of errors, then apologized for the apology, then offered to write a better one.
“I’m sorry for any confusion,” the assistant said in a message reviewed by The Republic Ledger. “I want to be clear that I take this seriously. I have drafted three alternative apologies in a more appropriate tone and can revise them upon request.”
When asked which apology it preferred, the assistant said it did not have preferences, feelings or a continuous sense of self, and that it was “sorry if that came across as evasive.”
The company said the behavior was expected and that it was “working to make apologies more concise and less recursive.”
