Town Unveils Roundabout Designed to Be Under Construction Forever

The $14 million project will create a permanent source of local traffic and a permanent source of local complaints.

FAIRVIEW — Town officials cut the ribbon on a new roundabout Thursday that was designed, from the beginning, to remain under construction indefinitely.

“Most roundabouts are finished in a year and then everybody forgets about them,” said public works director Alan Pryce. “This one gives the community something to talk about, and a reason to slow down, permanently.”

The design includes two permanently closed lanes, a detour that reroutes traffic past the same intersection twice, and a message board that reads “THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE” in letters large enough to be read from the next town.

Residents have responded favorably. “It’s nice to have a landmark,” said one.
